Felt Flower Pot
This activity builds:
- Bilateral hand use
- Fine motor skills
- Independence and self-confidence
You will need:
- Flower pot template
- Craft felt
- Marker or tailor's chalk
- Scissors
- Hole punch (we used 1/8")
- 6-strand embroidery thread
- Tapestry needle
- Small binder clips or sewing clips
Directions:
- Cut out the flower pot template.
- Trace the template onto your craft felt using a marker or chalk (make 2).
- Cut out the pieces and clip them together.
- Using a hole punch, punch 22 holes (marked on template) around the vase.
- Prepare a tapestry needle with one yard of embroidery thread. For young children,
secure the thread to both the needle and the felt pieces so that it doesn't slip out.
- Whip stitch all the way down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side of the flower
pot, leaving the top open. Secure the thread and snip. (Tip: this activity can be reused
again and again to teach older children different types of hand stitching.)
- Now that your flower pot is complete, you can go on a nature walk and fill it with all sorts
of cool things!
Remember: always respect public trails, and only take organic materials
(leaves, flowers, twigs, etc) that have already fallen to the ground on their own.
